SELECT/PREMIER PHILOSOPHY

The Farmington Soccer Club Select and Premier teams are formed through a tryout process on a date established by the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) and are geared toward the player determined to increase their skill level in a more competitive atmosphere.

The Farmington Soccer Club also looks to provide a higher caliber of coach while still maintaining the volunteer nature of our community club. Currently, nearly all the coaches of our highest teams in any given age group have earned a minimum USSF "D" coaching license (up to and including a USSF "B" coaching license) and/or have experience playing at the collegiate levels. The club supports the continuing coaching education of our coaches for the added benefit to our players.
The Farmington Soccer Club provides additional skills training opportunities at Total Soccer Farmington during the early and late winter included as part of the regular registration fees. Future expansion into providing dedicated Goalkeeper/Striker Training is planned as part of the club's dedication to improving the skills and growth of our players.

U8 and Younger

Teams will be playing with six players on the pitch, including the keeper, and the field is purposefully small. The roster limit is set at XX players. There is no off-sides and the referee has the discretion to correct technique and allow the player “re-do” on some things.

U9 and U10 Players

The roster limits and the number of players on the pitch change. You will now have 7 players on the pitch, including the keeper, and the coach will be able to have XX players on the roster. The rules remain the same as before, but the tactics change to account for another player. Referees are not nearly as helpful as before, but there is still flexibility in the way they call their match.

U11 and U12 Players

One of the most difficult concepts of soccer is introduced; off-sides. We are now beginning to see the players develop from enjoying the activity of soccer to playing the game. Roster increases to XX and the number of players on the pitch is now 9 (including the keeper).

U13 and Older

Welcome to the beautiful game. We are now on the full field with eleven players! Off-sides is strictly enforced and the officiating has three sets of eyes on play.

High School Freshman

The Limited Team Membership rule (Reg. I, Sect. 12) prohibits students from competing with non-school teams in the same sport during the high school season. Schools should never knowingly violate MHSAA Regulations, but exceptions have been made to this rule for girls soccer due to the overlap of club/school soccer in the spring season. The MHSAA encourages kids to participate in high school soccer, whether it be for the first time or after returning from a club experience, thus it has allowed some intentional violations of this rule in specific situations. If a student participates in a club team event after practicing with the high school team, the violation must be reported by the school and the student becomes ineligible for a minimum of the next three dates of competition. A second violation would likely make the student ineligible for the remainder of the season.

Club Player Age Philosophy

The Farmington Soccer Club believes that a player should remain in their “natural” age group and grade so that they may play with their friends. This doesn’t really impact a team until they approach middle and high school. “Young” players for their grade may become freshman before their peers which could jeopardize the team’s health. This is something that should be managed by the coaches, but is also something that players/families should be aware.
